This year I lead a group of eight incoming freshman honors students during the University Honors Program Annual Welcome Retreat. The retreat lasted two days (August 20th through 21st) and introduced the incoming honors freshman to the University of Cincinnati Honors Program and the four thematic areas which govern the program: Community Engagement, Leadership, Global Studies, and Research and Creative Arts. My job was to organize and lead the team building activities for my group. In the process of interacting with and inspiring the individuals in my group to take advantage of the Honors Program like I have this past year, being a leader has shown me a different perspective of the retreat and in some ways was more beneficial than my retreat last year. Speaking to my group as well as during the four Breakout Sessions, each of which focused on one of the four thematic areas, gave me the opportunity to develop my own style of public communication and leadership. I feel most comfortable and express myself best when I partially plan what I intend to say or do beforehand and then deliver myself partly impromptu depending on the environment, people I am around, etc. The retreat taught me so much about myself and led me to form relationships with the other retreat leaders and coordinators that will last throughout my college career.
