Review the attached information from the Active Citizen Continuum. How does this fit in alongside our discussions of community engagement? How can this framework be applied to future endeavors you may pursue? Please be specific and consider a space, opportunity, or other event where you might apply this framework.
The Active Citizen Continuum is the basis of how a person develops themselves into an individual who effectively engages in a community. Before arriving to the first Exploring Community Engagement class, I would say that I was a "Volunteer" who was eager to get involved in the Cincinnati community, but was not as informed about the ways to go about it or the issues surrounding the community as I would like it to be. Through our readings and discussions, I have slowly developed awareness of the key social issues in Cincinnati and have begun the journey to becoming a conscientious citizen. The various trips and explorations to the Clifton area outside of the UC campus, OTR, Price Hill, and Northside have really given me the opportunity to realize the issues which realize some of the issues which exist in Cincinnati. From exploring the run down environment of Clifton to discovering the urban renewal or gentrification of OTR, Jessica, our Exploring Community Engagement teacher, has allowed me to witness our environment from my own perspective, and as a result, has given me the opportunity to grow my own understanding of the Cincinnati Community. This aspect of the class has been instrumental in my development from a conscientious citizen to an active citizen. Personally I have learned that the way I want to be an active citizen in the Cincinnati community is helping individuals in OTR who are less fortunate than me. Our trip to Elementz really made me realize the help and opportunities that less fortunate children need in order to properly develop. Therefore, I chose to organize a can food drive for families in OTR to have a better meal during Thanksgiving and Christmas.
